How to be resilient

Updated: Nov 22, 2020

The main reason I find resilience difficult is because it’s not instant. You don’t have one workout and then see your perfect body in the same way you don’t start a new career and instantly see a lot of money in the bank or accolades to your name. It’s the effort it takes to carry on when it doesn’t seem like there's anything to carry on for.

To gain resilience you must use small, very small gains and get them to motivate you to the next step. That’s what resilience is and it is tough.

You have to keep going even when you feel there is no progress and all you want to do is give up. How do you face the thought of defeat with steely indifference? The first thing is knowing yourself, this takes conviction within yourself that no one can judge you and no situation can define you. Whatever the outcome you know within yourself that you will continue.

Living with uncomfortable emotions

I dislike uncertainty and more so I dislike not having a clear path in front of me. At the moment, I feel as though I’m moving in the dark with my hands stretched out, feeling my way forward. I see this time in my life as growing pains. A lot of changes have taken place over the year and a few not of my making. Yet giving up is not an option, I have to evolve and find that inner strength that keeps me going regardless of success or failure.

How to persevere when you’re not making your goals

The only way I can get through this is two-fold. First is patience, keep trying and something will shift. The second is understanding that I’m learning. When things don’t go my way I have to re-evaluate and it's through that I learn something new and something that will get me closer to my desired outcome. It’s a setback but most likely you’ll get it second time trying.

How athletes deal with the lows to moderate their emotions

We celebrate athletes successes but we should also celebrate their determination to compete again after a defeat. I often wonder how tennis players who have competed and lost then go on the try again. Dealing with all that disappointment, that inner voice of doubt that tells you someone else is better. It must be the toughest mental strain to overcome and yet they do. If you can remember that, you can push on and keep trying.

Set the big goal aside and make bite-size goals

If the goal seems to be getting further and further away, break it down into many small goals. Say if you want to start a new business and your goal is to have 50 clients in the first three months but try as you might it's not happening. You might change your goal of mastering marketing or creating online courses to build your brand. You’ll still see your goal but now the number is less important, it's now about building the business.

So I guess there is nothing left to do other than to be resilient and persistent.
